The monument recognizes a significant turn in history that brought the United States together and garnered support from around the world. It has four life-size, bronze statues holding hands in a circle, facing outwards with their heads raised up. A resemblance of the Twin Towers is in the middle. One symbolic figure is missing, with only foot prints remaining, thus allowing the public to grasp the hands of the statues while their photos are taken. Actual historic metal from the former World Trade Center Twin Towers and stone facade pieces from the Pentagon can be viewed.
The statues represent different races and professions; there is a fireman, military personnel, office worker and flight attendant. Also, the statues' feet, legs and lower torsos are roughly textured, and the texture on the statues gets a smoother finish and more detailing moving upwards towards their faces and hands. This signifies the American spirit of rising above the challenges, and also remembering the past while looking out towards a more peaceful future.
